Knowledge of:

Must possess a working knowledge of the geography, street system, and routes of the County. Understand traffic codes, personal safety procedures, and the principles of first aid. Be familiar with the operation of equipment, criminal codes, state and federal statutes, and the practices and theory of established procedures.

 

Ability to:

Must demonstrate the ability to operate police vehicles, firearms, and other assigned equipment. Evaluate and determine appropriate actions in various routine and emergency situations. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, establish effective relationships within the workplace, and interact positively with the public. Accept direction and guidance from senior commanders, work well under pressure, and implement all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures established by the Sheriff’s Office. Show a satisfactory understanding of the role, function, and responsibilities of a law enforcement professional through in-service training, New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy training, and job performance.

Performs a full range of police work to protect life and property through the enforcement of laws.

  1. Patrols County areas and roads for the purposes of: providing immediate response to calls, enforcing traffic safety and reducing or preventing crime; conducts roving and targeted patrols on homes and businesses to prevent and reduce entry crimes, trespass, vandalism and damage to property; conducts neighborhood watch training to the general public. 
  2. Carries out field interviews, interrogations and arrests as necessary based upon reasonable suspicion and probable cause; conducts criminal surveillance; performs preliminary and when assigned, follow-up investigations of crimes committed within the patrol area; and may function as a field training officer when assigned; attends training to maintain required law enforcement certification. 
  3. Assists investigators at major crime scenes; aids citizens in need of medical, emergency or motorist assistance; provides traffic control and accident investigation as needed or required; participates in sobriety check points; responds to emergency situations when assigned; assists in serving arrest warrants.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and successful completion of the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy law officer certification program

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid/current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer within the United States.
  • Successful completion of County screening and hiring procedures.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both an office and outdoors, in varied weather conditions. Work schedule shall include shift, evening, weekend, holiday and on- call hours. Travel is required. May require arduous physical exertion under vigorous and unusual conditions. Must be able to drag 175 lbs. for 15 feet and lift up to 50 lbs. Manual and finger dexterity required. May be subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and/or animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, environmental allergens, gases and fumes. May be subject to exposure to CRT’s and VDT’s. May be subject to life threatening situations.

 

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening and psychological exam. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Selected candidate must successfully pass and receive certification by waiver as a Law Enforcement Officer through the State of New Mexico Department of Public Safety within one year of employment. Subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Once you apply, HR will send you a background packet to complete and schedule you for a testing date. At the testing date, you will turn in your background packet, you will be administered a general knowledge written test, followed by physical assessment. If you pass both, a background check will be conducted which can take up to 3 weeks or longer depending on your background. At the completion of the background check, you will be scheduled for a physical/medical screening and a psychological evaluation. If all the aforementioned requirements are met and passed successfully, you may receive a hire date at this point.

Once HR confirms your qualifications, an interview will be set up by our command staff. You will be sent a background packet which will need to be turned in at the time of your interview. The interview will include a written test of basic police knowledge. Lateral deputies do not typically need to submit to a psychological examination, but it is considered on a case by case basis. A physical/medical screening will be administered and upon completion of everything, and a job offer maybe tendered.
  • Yes. The NM DPS Training Academy is a 16-week training academy that will instruct you on everything you will need to be successful as a law enforcement officer. The Academy requires cadets to stay on campus throughout the week. A “typical” week will have you report on Sunday evening and you will live in the campus dorms until Friday afternoon, when you will be released for the weekend.   • No. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office provides you with all your uniforms and equipment, including firearms. Cadets are provided their duty uniform and the required uniform for the Academy. Laterals are provided their duty uniform. All deputies receive an annual uniform stipend after completion of first year of employment.
