Knowledge of & Ability to:

 

The ideal candidate possesses a solid understanding of county geography, traffic codes, personal safety procedures, first aid principles, and departmental rules and regulations, along with proficiency in using relevant tools and equipment. They demonstrate strong communication skills, both oral and written. Must be adept at building effective working relationships with coworkers and the public. This role requires the ability to assess situations quickly and objectively, make sound decisions under stress, and handle various circumstances involving human behavior. Additionally, the candidate must be capable of enforcing New Mexico State Statutes and meeting deadlines under tight time constraints.

This position pays at an annual salary of $46,280.00

Provide public safety service and support to the community that might be delayed due to workload and calls for service of sworn deputies.

 

  1. Respond to assigned requests for service and conduct preliminary investigation on traffic related matters.
  2. Examine roadways for hazards and clear obstructions if necessary.
  3. Direct traffic during special events, emergencies, or when traffic conditions warrant special control.
  4. Provide sworn testimony in court.
  5. Conduct escorts.
  6. Initiate and coordinate medical response as needed.
  7. Answer basic questions from the public, assist motorists, pedestrians, and other citizens.
  8. Monitor Santa Fe County owned cameras.
  9. Complete written reports as required.
  10. Enforce County Ordinances.
  11. May provide basic emergency aid.
  12. May help identify witnesses and evidence at accident scenes; assist in diagramming when directed by investigating officer.
  13.  May assist patrol officers in collecting initial information on a Uniform Accident Report (UAR).
  14. May assist other law enforcement or public safety agencies on-site.
  15.  May issue “Motor Vehicle Accident Report” form involving roadway accidents where damage is less than $500.00 and there are no complaints of injury.
  16. May direct correspondence to vehicle owners involving improperly placed vehicles on public right of way.
  17. Other appropriate and related duties as assigned

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 

Other Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have a record clear of felony convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude

Environmental Conditions:

  • Work is performed in both an office setting and outdoors, in varied weather conditions and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers. The work schedule shall include shift, evening, weekend, holiday and on-call hours. Travel is required. May require arduous physical exertion under vigorous and unusual conditions. Must be able to drag 175 lbs. for 15 feet and lift up to 50 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear. Clarity of vision at long and short distance is required. May be subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and/or animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, environmental allergens, gases and fumes. Work may involve high risk or potentially dangerous or life-threatening situations; exposure to excessive noise; working near hazardous moving equipment or machinery; or working with hostile, violent or offensive individuals. Work may require the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, or materials.

Once you apply, HR will send you a background packet to complete and schedule you for a testing date. At the testing date, you will turn in your background packet, you will be administered a general knowledge written test, followed by physical assessment. If you pass both, a background check will be conducted which can take up to 3 weeks or longer depending on your background. At the completion of the background check, you will be scheduled for a physical/medical screening and a psychological evaluation. If all the aforementioned requirements are met and passed successfully, you may receive a hire date at this point.

Once HR confirms your qualifications, an interview will be set up by our command staff. You will be sent a background packet which will need to be turned in at the time of your interview. The interview will include a written test of basic police knowledge. Lateral deputies do not typically need to submit to a psychological examination, but it is considered on a case by case basis. A physical/medical screening will be administered and upon completion of everything, and a job offer maybe tendered.
  • Yes. The NM DPS Training Academy is a 16-week training academy that will instruct you on everything you will need to be successful as a law enforcement officer. The Academy requires cadets to stay on campus throughout the week. A “typical” week will have you report on Sunday evening and you will live in the campus dorms until Friday afternoon, when you will be released for the weekend.   • No. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office provides you with all your uniforms and equipment, including firearms. Cadets are provided their duty uniform and the required uniform for the Academy. Laterals are provided their duty uniform. All deputies receive an annual uniform stipend after completion of first year of employment.
